Dos and Don'ts After a Teeth Whitening Procedure

Teeth whitening in Winter Park can dramatically brighten your smile, achieving several lighter shades in a single appointment. Sadly, the results aren’t permanent. To make matters worse, after the treatment, your teeth are more vulnerable to staining, especially in the first 24 to 48 hours.

To maintain your bright smile and make the most of your procedure, it’s important to follow specific aftercare guidelines.

DO: Stick to a "White Diet" for the First 48 Hours

Right after whitening, your teeth are more porous and absorb stains more easily. For that reason, cosmetic dentists recommend following a "white diet." This involves eating light-colored, non-staining foods such as:

  • Chicken or turkey (not heavily seasoned)
  • White rice
  • Cauliflower
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Egg whites
  • Pasta with white sauce
  • Bananas, apples (peeled), and pears
  • Plain yogurt and milk

Avoid anything that could leave a stain, and when in doubt, choose pale, bland foods.

DON’T: Consume Staining Drinks

Coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, and colored juices like cranberry or grape juice are among the top culprits for stains. If you can't avoid them indefinitely, try to limit them for at least 48 hours after treatment. After that, drink through a straw to avoid contact with your teeth, and then rinse your mouth with water.

DO: Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a whitening or non-abrasive toothpaste. Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth, which can dull the results. A proper oral hygiene routine keeps your smile clean and prevents discoloration caused by food and bacteria.

DON’T: Smoke or Use Tobacco Products

Smoking or chewing tobacco is one of the fastest ways to ruin a freshly whitened smile. Nicotine and tar can stain your teeth yellow or brown very quickly. If you’ve ever considered quitting, post-whitening is a great time to commit. And if you can’t, at least limit this practice 24 hours after a whitening treatment.

DO: Touch Up as Needed

Teeth whitening isn't permanent. Depending on your habits, results can last from a few months to a couple of years. At-home touch-up kits, whitening toothpaste, or occasional in-office treatments can help you keep your smile bright and shining.

DON’T: Overdo Whitening Treatments

Too much whitening, especially using over-the-counter kits, can wear down your enamel and cause sensitivity. Follow your dentist’s guidance on how often to whiten, and never bleach your teeth more than recommended.

DO: Schedule Regular Dental Visits

Routine cleanings and exams help remove surface stains and keep your teeth and gums healthy. Your dentist can also monitor how your whitening is holding up and recommend maintenance tips tailored to your needs.
