TMJ Treatment

Understanding Your Symptoms

Describe where the discomfort occurs, when it started, and whether chewing or jaw movement affects it. The examination considers the joints, muscles, and teeth. A click alone does not establish a condition that needs treatment.

Choosing an Approach

Management depends on the findings and may involve advice, monitoring, or an appliance when appropriate. Some symptoms need assessment by another professional. An appliance is not the right treatment for every cause of jaw pain.

Reviewing Progress

Keep track of changes in comfort and function and follow the review schedule. Report worsening pain, locking, or difficulty opening. Avoid assuming that a permanent bite change is necessary without understanding the diagnosis and alternatives.

Questions About TMJ & Jaw Pain Assessment

Is all jaw pain caused by the TMJ?

No. Teeth, muscles, and other conditions can also cause pain in the area. An examination helps decide the next step.

Will a night guard solve it?

A guard may be useful in selected cases, but suitability depends on the cause of your symptoms.

Is Botox used for TMJ treatment?

In some cases, yes—Botox may help relax the muscles associated with TMJ symptoms. Whether it's appropriate depends on the cause and severity of your symptoms, and is discussed as part of your assessment.
